چکیده

We report on the discovery of a new potential galaxy threshing system in the COSMOS 2 square degree field using the prime-focus camera, Suprime-Cam, on the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope. This system consists of a giant elliptical galaxy withMV 21:6 and a tidally disrupted satellite galaxy withMV 17:7 at a photometric redshift of z 0:08. This redshift is consistent with the spectroscopic redshift of 0.079 for the giant elliptical galaxy obtained from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) archive. The luminosity masses of the two galaxies are 3:7 ; 10 and 3:1 ; 10 M , respectively. The distance between the two galaxies is greater than 100 kpc. The two tidal tails emanating from the satellite galaxy extend over 150 kpc. This system would be the second well-defined galaxy threshing system found so far. COSMOS 5921+0638: Characterization and analysis of a new strong gravitationally lensed AGN

Context. Recently, new strong lens candidates have been discovered within the COSMOS field. Here we present VLT/FORS1 spectroscopic follow-up observations and HST/WFPC2 imaging of the system COSMOS 5921+0638, which shows quadruply lensed images and a perfect Einstein ring. Aims. With the available observations of COSMOS 5921+0638 we study the nature of the system as well as its photometric, spe...

A Wide Angle Tail Radio Galaxy in the Cosmos Field: Evidence for Cluster Formation

We have identified a complex galaxy cluster system in the COSMOS field via a wide angle tail (WAT) radio galaxy consistent with the idea that WAT galaxies can be used as tracers of clusters. The WAT galaxy, CWAT-01, is coincident with an elliptical galaxy resolved in the HST-ACS image. Using the COSMOS multiwavelength data set, we derive the radio properties of CWAT-01 and use the optical and X...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Quasars in the Cosmos Field

We obtained medium-resolution spectra of 336 quasar candidates in the COSMOS HST/Treasury field using the MMT 6.5-meter telescope and the Hectospec multi-object spectrograph. Candidates were drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR1 catalog using quasar flags set by the SDSS multi-color quasar target selection algorithm. In this paper we present our discovery spectra from 1.39 square d...
